Hunting in Mongolia: Altai, Hangai and Gobi argalis & ibex.

Program Information

For travelers the name of Mongolia evokes great adventures. The country of infinite horizons, the great steppes, the nomads, the Empire of Genghis Khan… Very few countries on earth awake the adventurous instincts than Mongolia. And for the hunters, nothing more challenging that the impressive argalis, the exclusive ibex of the Gobi desert, the white-tailed gazelles, the herds of Asian wolves and the great maral stag … The natural heritage of this wonderful country makes Mongolia a mythical destination for the mountain hunter. There are three sub-species of argalis and two species of Ibex, which are among the most dreamed game by hunters. Hunting is usually done on foot and with the support of 4×4 vehicles.

In July and August the temperatures are agreeable, et even hot during the day. September in the Altai areas it is usual to find snow on the peaks.

The Altai ibex hunting is between 2000 and 2800 meters altitude, its trophy is robust at the base and shorter than the mid-asian ibex. The Gobi ibex lives in lower altitude, maximum 1500 meters, in the foothills of the famous desert. A good Altai trophy could be between 105 and 110 cm, and a nice Gobi ibex trophy measures between 95 and 100 cm.

The most impressive trait of the 3 Mongolian argali sub-species are the huge bases of their trophy, and we wonder how they are able to hold those impressive horns over their heads. The average length of the Altai argali, the bigger one, is about 55 inches, sometimes more than 60 ”. The Hangai argali, which inhabits the mountains of the same name, who separate the Gobi desert from the Altai mountain range, has an average of 50 to 52 inches and the Gobi argali, the smallest of the three, between 42 and 45 inches.

Hunting season

Argalis: July 1^st to September 30^th

Ibex: July 14^th to October 15^th.

Recommended season: August and September for all species.

Location

Altai range, in the southeast of the country for Altai ibex and argali. For Gobi ibex and argali, the low mountainous areas who surrounds the Gobi deser, in the center and south of the country. A domestic flight is required often to save time to different local airports.

We will take care of the domestic flights, or the flight schedule of your own jet.

Trip plan

Day 1: Arrival to Ulaanbaatar, welcome and custom clearance. Change terminal for domestic flight to the hunting area.

Day 2 to 6: Hunting for ibex (*)

Day 7: Transfer to Ulaanbaatar, night in hotel.

Day 8: Farewell and departure to your country.

NOTE: add 4 more days for the 2-ibex combo and 5 more days for argali.

Lodging

In Ulaanbaatar the Capital, you will stay in a first-class hotel and for your meals you can choose wide selection of fine restaurants in Ulaanbaatar.

At base camps in the hunting area, you will stay in yurts, also called gers (tents made of latticed walls covered by felt and canvas). This is the Traditional home of herdsmen. The gers are comfortable, spacious and warmth. A stove in the center heats the ger, with a smokestack through a hole in the center of the roof.

The beds consist of mattresses on elevated wooden beds. The restroom facilities and dinning room are located outside in a secondary yurt.

possible combinations

It is possible the combo of different argalis, or argalis and ibex. In all our areas is it possible to hunt wolf by chance and the white-tailed gazelle in Gobi area.

Additional information

Guns and ammo:

Lightweight rifles and quality optics with a ballistic turret are required. Long-range shooting is often necessary, and the hunter must have a good knowledge of the setup and trajectory of his equipment and ammunition. Cartridges like 7mm RM, 270WSM; 300Wby, 300WM, 300WSM, 30-378 are very suitable for this expedition.
