Program Information

The Himalayas are the most mythical of the mountain ranges in the world and a dream for hikers, alpinists and hunters. Both species are hunted in Nepal, specifically in the Dhorpatan Game Reserve.

Blue sheep is a magnificent animal with horns growing outward horizontally and downward. Despite their name, Blue Sheep are neither blue nor are they sheep! Their short, dense coats are slate grey to pale brown (changing slightly between summer and winter) though they do have a bluish sheen. No other animal in the earth lives higher than the  blue sheep, also called Bharal for locals. The Tahr, who has a beautiful and characteristic long fur, lives in the lowest leafy forests of the Himalayas. Despite what it may seem, bharal hunting is easier than tahr because it lives in  open mountain and in high density. On the other side, the  thar spent a lot of time hided in the forest, and often ,the hunting method is to wait tahrs in small meadows surrounded by closed forests of bamboo and rhododendrons.

Dhorpatan Game Reserve is located in the foothills of the Dhaulagiri I, wo belongs  to the 14 peaks of more than 8,000 meters of the earth. Often the hunter must climb up to 5000 meters what requires a good physical condition. 14 days must be foreseen for the blue sheep and 18 for the combo with tahr. It is recommended, to save time, take the helicopter for the transfer Kathmandu-Dhorpatan,  saving more than 20 hours of car and full day of trekking.

Hunting season

The hunting season is limited to two periods of the year: October / November and March / April.

Location

Both species are hunted only in the Dhorpatan Game Reserve, located in the northeast of the country, about 70 kms away from Pokhara … hunting in Dhorpatan seeing the peak of Dhaulagiri I is an almost mystical experience for the mountain hunter. Helicopter transfer is the best way to reach the hunting area, otherwise 2 more days each way will be necessary going by 4×4 and hiking.

Trip plan

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu, customs and rifle formalities. Transfer to the hotel, night in Kathmandu.

Day 2: Helicopter flight in the morning and trekking in the afternoon to reach the base camp.

Day 3 to 10: Hunting blue sheep in fly camp (add 4 more days for tahr combo)

Day 11: Trekking to the helipad, return flight by helicopter to Kathmandú.

Day 12: Kathmandu: preparation of documents for export, night in hotel.

Day 13: Return flight.

NOTE: this schedule is indicative and can change, hunters generally finish the hunt earlier and it´s highly recommended to buy an open fight ticket.

Lodging

Good quality hotels in Kathmandu. During the hunting you will be accommodated in tents, the hunter will be accompanied with more than 25 people, including Sherpas, porters, cooks, guides and assistants …it is an “old style” expedition who turns in a lifetime experience. The porters will carry a kitchen, tables, living room tents, equipment, and all the firewood necessary to cook and warm up the camp … the service and comfort offered by this hunting seems impossible having in mind we are lodged  in a fly camp more than 4,000 meters above sea level.
